Introducing the UTU Project by CPMHF– Fixing the Nation’s Democracy through Young Voices for Change!
Rooted in the timeless Swahili philosophy of Utu (humanistic values), we harness artivism to awaken artists, empower Kenyan youth, and drive social justice, good governance, gender equality, anti-corruption, and human rights. Through creative arts, community collaborations, and bold activism, we’re mainstreaming culture for a more just, peaceful, and inclusive Kenya.
Fixing the Nation’s Democracy through Young Voices for Change Project (Utu Project)
Our main goal is to promote social justice in Kenya. We aim to elevate public understanding of civic rights and responsibilities, thereby nurturing the citizenry that’s ready and eager to engage effectively in public participation. We endeavor to Strengthen capacities of civil old society organizations and empower young voices with the tools and knowledge necessary to continue to advocate for societal improvements and drive sustainable change. Through these efforts, we contribute to creating vibrant civic spaces essential for the health and vitality of democracy in Kenya.
We work to protect and help civic spaces to thrive to ensure all people have the opportunity to raise their voices, influence decisions, amplify and support the diverse array of local agents of change and movements advocating for various rights and reforms in Kenya.
We recognize that grassroots voices have deep-rooted connections for each other and the communities they serve and come from. This is an indication that they can be instrumental as driving societal force for transformation.
We believe in safe spaces that provide opportunities for the young voices to gain visibility, access resources they need, and forge meaningful alliances through networking, capacity building and training workshops, all organized to empower young activists with the tools and knowledge they need to navigate the complexities of advocacy, mobilize support, and articulate their demands more effectively and therefore empowering underrepresented and marginalized communities that have too often been excluded in decision making, active political and civic participation.
We also believe in the power of young people to instigate meaningful change. Young voices and public participation can effectively transform governance for a better administration that provides for its people’s quest for democracy and social justice.
Our focus is driven by a firm belief in the voices of people coming together for a common walk of unity. It’s through the walk of unity that significant steps towards good governance, equity, social justice, democracy and human rights can be achieved. This will open a journey for dialogue and reconciliation walk called “UTU” that will help to reduce violations of human rights and guarantee freedom of speech and expression. These efforts are vital in nurturing societies that are grounded in the tenets of democracy and justice for all.
Empowering young people to make their voices heard is not enough and that’s why this we will go beyond just listening to young voices and instead, walk with the young voices to building institutional systems that favor young voices in decision-making processes, thereby increasing the responsiveness of government systems and policies to address people’s real needs. Most importantly we will seek the participation of the general public and engage the young people to learn how to change their communication according to the needs of the people.
To do so, we seek to effectively engage with and strengthen networks and connections between local civil society organizations, the marginalized young voices that are always suppressed with brutality, the vulnerable social justice activists, the disadvantaged, individuals and organizations, the regional and international civil society organizations, the donors, the transnational advocacy networks, and the international community.
Digital Artivism and Activism is a critical area of focus in reflecting our understanding of the immense potential that digital platforms and technologies hold in the modern era of activism. In an age where information can spread rapidly across the globe, we recognize the power of digital tools in mobilizing communities, raising awareness on critical issues, and advocating for human rights and social justice. We remain as active participants dedicated to defending digital rights, and ensuring that the digital landscape remains a space for free expression and impactful activism.
We will continuously explore innovative ways to harness the digital revolution, including the potential applications of artificial intelligence, to drive sustainable social and political change. Our work in Digital Activism encompasses not just the use of social media and online platforms but also delves into strategic discussions on leveraging emerging technologies to enhance the effectiveness of advocacy efforts in a sustainable way.
We are committed to empowering public participation with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the digital realm sustainably, safely and effectively. By fostering a collaborative environment where technology meets public participation. We aim to catalyze transformative change, ensuring that the voices calling for justice and equality are amplified in the digital sphere sustainably through public participation.
